Sakai Tips
Sakai 2.1.2 Download Tips
- The Sakai Project does not yet release patches, but also does not remove unpatched releases from its download area!! So even though Sakai 2.1.2 was the official release, the current (best!) version is Sakai 2.1.x; export 2.1.x from the subversion (svn) repository. You'll need an svn client like tortoisesvn to do this. The URL you will need is https://source.sakaiproject.org/svn/sakai/branches/sakai_2-1-x/.
Supporting Sakai
- Sakai and svn - in MooseTrout's opinion, at this time the best way for smaller schools to support a local Sakai instance is to either turn off tools that don't work, or else to use a local svn repository and some variation on the vendor branch technique and take care of merge conflicts between your customizations and project changes (yes, even for a simple file like sakai.properties). If you would like to do this yourself, the links to the svnbook are where we would recommend you start; presumably there are also other good online references. The sakai-dev mailing list is also very friendly to beginners; you will need to join the sakai-dev site at collab.sakaiproject.org in order to be part of that mailing list. Alternatively, if you would like help getting an svn repository and workflow set up, please feel free to contact us and we'd be happy to discuss a quote for as small a piece of work as you need!
- Which version? -- well, this is a tough one. Some big schools stayed with 2.1.x for the fall 2006 term; some moved to 2.2.x. If you don't feel comfortable using svn vendor branching and svn merges, stick with 2.1.x, which seems pretty stable.
- MooseTrout is looking at offering an annual maintenance contract for small colleges and universities; it would include initial installation and setup of an svn repository to support local customizations along with vendor branches, critical patching and monthly updates. Please let us know if this service would be useful to you!
